Guru Smt. Latha Ravi

‘Kalai Chudarmani’ ‘Natyakala Sironmani’ Smt. Latha Ravi is a rare combination of flawless dancer, choreographer, music composer, singer, teacher and author. Art runs in her veins as she hails from a family with rich cultural background. She was initiated into this traditional art by her mother Smt. Chithra Narayanan and was groomed by her grandmother Late Smt. Rukmini Srinivasan who was a disciple of renowned Smt. Gowri Ammal of Mylapore. Both her mother and grandmother had a free-flowing way of teaching dance, their approach to dance exemplified effortless grace and natural, spontaneous facial expressions.

‘Bharatha Natyalaya’ was started by Smt. Rukmini Srinivasan in 1947 dedicating wholeheartedly to this art. Dancing being her life and chosen profession Smt. Latha Ravi took the reins of ‘Bharatha Natyalaya’ in 1986. With an in-depth knowledge of the art form combined with the passion for teaching, she has completed arangetram for 121 students. She has conceptualized, choreographed and presented her own thematic productions which include Sapthaswara Mahimanvitham, Meenakshi Kalyanam, Murugan Valli Kalyanam, Pasmasuran Mohini, Uppiliyappan Kalyanam, Andal Thirupaavai, Silapadhiharam, Dasavatharam and many more. All these speak volumes of her experience and choreographic excellence and have earned her an exceptional name in the dance fraternity. Many of her students have participated and won prizes in several competitions and television talent shows. Her students were also part of ‘Rajarajeshwaram 1000’ in Tanjore and ‘Tribute to Bharatha Munivar’ in Namakkal.

She has been conferred upon with many titles which include ‘Natyakala Saraswathi’, ‘Narthana Sironmani’, ‘Natyakala Sironmani’, ‘Natya Swaroopa Mamani’ and the famous ‘Bharatha Munivar Award’. She holds the prestigious award of ‘Kalai Chudarmani’ issued by the Department of Art and Culture, Government of Tamil Nadu.

Smt. Latha Ravi also takes pride in having trained her daughters Smt. Ramya Suresh and Kumari and Supprasanna Ravi, who, in their own right, are acclaimed dancers giving performances in various dance festivals. Continuing her rich tradition Smt. Ramya Suresh, a fourth generation dance teacher has completed arangetram for 110 students. Dance defines the flow of daily life in Smt. Latha Ravi’s house, and as a family they collaborate to teach, perform and create.
